Well it’s a saga that’s been going on a while, and if it was a biscuit being dipped in milk – the cookie would have crumbled by now.

New guidance is continuing to be drafted and a legal opinion is expected very soon from the International Chamber of Commerce led group working in this legislation. Remember, that we already know that it’s not half as scary as many web developers out there are thinking. Compliance with the legislation can be achieved pretty easily – just take a look at bbc.co.uk – and all this extra work is designed really to help consumers understand more. Most cookies are harmless, they generally help make browsing a website much easier and more convenient for the user, and some can help the site owners develop the site further based on what their users are actually coming there to see.

Watch this space and we’ll be one of very few independent development companies with a true understanding and interest in this issue so that we can help all our customers efficiently with least (if not no) impact on their day to day lives.

I had an informative and interesting meeting today with Google UK. The wonderful building and premises of Google yet again couldn’t cease to amaze me; what a wonderful culture to work in.

The important thing for our customers is ‘Whats happening next?’. Well as it was a chat somewhat off the record one-to-one we probably shouldn’t announce too much but I think it is fair to say that user analytics is a big thing on the agenda. Next week you should start to be able to see visualised user funnels that will really help a more in depth analysis to take place.

This is also a call for any customers to tell us more about what they need from Google Analytics, what’s missing and what do you like that you think should be even easier to use?

Of course, asking us these questions we can start to help you right away, but for product enhancements we will take these to our next chat.

A couple of things we raised:

Ability to have more user roles (for setting up goals etc)

Integration with Google Shopping

The issue with individual links being tracked per click (when more than one are on a page)

API data use

Get more information on updates from the Google Analytics official blog at: http://analytics.blogspot.com/

2nd August 2011
Today we experienced something that has never happened on our systems before, an outage of a few of the domains in our DNS (Domain Name System) set-up.

The problem was identified & rectified in a short space of time. Some returning customers may have found their way to websites affected thanks to the way the internet works (with cached copy of the DNS record) and because no other part of our network or service faced an issue.

The issue only affected some customers with a standard record. No e-commerce sites were affected. Please be aware that this had no affect on files or databases held on our servers; the two systems are different.

We apologise for this occurrence and are working with the supplier to locate exactly how the fault occurred and have an upgrade to our systems already planned that will mitigate risks from this happening again.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Once again, we apologise for any inconvenience this caused and are committed to maintaining a high quality infrastructure and customers can be assured that we are taking steps to address the issue.

Many thanks for your custom.

Well we have been busy planning things and delivering on client projects as usual. But we’ve also been busy monitoring some of the social space to see people’s reactions to the latest development in the web world – the updated ePrivacy Directive from Europe; otherwise known as ‘the cookie law’.

We met last week with a representative from the Department of Culture Media & Sport (Government department responsible for implementing the directive to UK law) and the Information Commissioner’s Office (The regulator who receives complaints about infringements, ICO) thanks to the International Chamber of Commerce.

Whilst we will make a more detailed summary available for clients who would like support complying with the new law the short answer to those asking ‘what?’ is:

Websites will need to collect informed consent (not necessarily prior consent) to set cookies on their users’ computers. The best way to comply is to make a very clear privacy policy that covers what each cookie is, what it’s used for and how the customer can refuse it. Remember also that login’s and site registrations are classed as actions where the setting of cookies are strictly necessary, but use it as a great opportunity to ask customers to consent to the cookies you use across your website by providing a link to the full information (your shiny new privacy policy) and a check box that they must tick to proceed.

More information is available from the ICO, with their guidance document a good place to start: http://www.ico.gov.uk

The BBC seem to have implemented compliance very well, take a look at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/privacy/bbc-cookies-policy.shtml
